American Band Instrument Service Repairmen Attend Repair Clinic In San Antonio

All four of your band instrument repairmen from American Band Instrument Service were among the seventy people that attended a two-day repair clinic in San Antonio on Friday and Saturday October 10 and 11. The clinic was hosted by Ed Myers USA one of the world leaders in woodwind instrument pads and NAPBIRT the world association of band instrument repair people.

Our instrument manufacturing industry is changing very fast and we felt the need to gather and discuss some of the changes. The manufactures are using new types of glues and fasteners to hold instruments together. It was great to have the different representatives explain the new procedures, tools, and chemicals they are currently using. It goes a long way toward helping us serve you and your school better.

New, and in some cases better, band instrument finishes are being used by both domestic and foreign manufactures. In many instances the so call “lacquer finish” is not really lacquer. We found “lacquered” instruments being finished with plastic, new epoxies, special types of clear or colored glue to name only a few. The instruments we saw were very beautiful and colorful, but not what most directors in East Texas want to see in their bands. Colors like pink, red, blue, Green, and combinations on horns. Whether we like or dislike an individual instrument we have to be prepared to repair all them.

Dave Ferens gave Master Clinic on instrument pads. Some domestic manufactures are shipping their instruments with synthetic pads instead of the traditional skin pads. These new types are showing up in piccolos, flutes, and clarinets, and they have to be handled and seated in a different way than regular pads.

Some of you may remember Dave, he lived and worked in East Texas. Dave is considered a Master Clinician by the NAPBIRT association.

Rex Bullock has taught repair at major universities, big box stores, and NAPBIRT. He is a NAPBIRT Master Clinician and the owner of Ed Myers USA. We learn a lot about the new pads and pad glues from him.
