On Saturday November 16, 2002, twenty East Texas drummers met at American Band Instrument's Education Center in Tyler, Texas for the First Annual Duel of the Drummers competition. The competitors ranged from 8 years old through 34 years old. The competitors were grouped into three age divisions. These divisions were 13 and under, 14 through 15, and 16 and over. Each participant was given not more than 15 minutes to set up (rearrange) the drum set and perform a solo of his choosing. The drum set used for the competition was a profession six piece set. Competitors were allowed to use their own foot pedal, cymbals, and snare drum, if they wished. In addition to the trophies, the winners divided up prizes donated by Pearl Corporation, Yamaha, Toca, Paiste, Zildjin, and American Band. Prizes included a Pearl piccolo snare drum, a Pearl set of Rhythm Traveler drums, Toca bongos and stand, "T" shirts from all the companies above, a Paiste cymbal bag and ride cymbal, a crash Zildjin cymbal, video taped drum lessons, and much more. Each of the drummers brought with them their own group of admirers who clapped and cheered them. It was a Saturday fill with great fun for everyone that attended. An estimated 120 people attended the event. |
