On Saturday November 22, 2003, twenty East Texas drummers met at American Band Instrument's Education Center in Tyler, Texas for the First Annual Duel of the Drummers competition. The competitors ranged from 10 years old through 23 years old.

The competitors were grouped into three age divisions. These divisions were 13 and under, 14 through 15, and 16 and over. Each participant was given not more than 15 minutes to set up (rearrange) the drum set and perform a solo of his choosing. The drum set used for the competition was a profession six piece set. Competitors were allowed to use their own foot pedal, cymbals, and snare drum, if they wished.

In addition to the trophies, the winners divided up prizes donated by Pearl Corporation, Yamaha, Toca, Paiste, Zildjin, and American Band. Prizes included a Pearl piccolo snare drum, a Gretch popcorn drum, "T" shirts from all the companies above, a Paiste cymbal, a Zildjin cymbal, video taped drum lessons, and much more.

Each of the drummers brought with them their own group of admirers who clapped and cheered them. It was a Saturday fill with great fun for everyone that attended. An estimated 210 people attended the event.

The overall Best of Contest winner of the Duel of the Drummers was Phillip Ellis. He also won the Adult Division contest as well. His drum set solo consisted of both jazz type and rock type drumming. He rated high in the three major judging categories of Style, Tempo, Originality, and Overall. His rock solid tempo, great control of volume, and bass drum work set him apart from the other contestants.

Kerry West won the Junior Division. Kerry played with trimendous drive and spirit. He made good use of the entire drum kit, and had good ideas. He scored high in styler, originality, and overall.

Michael Mims was the winner of the Youth Division. Michael showed a lot of developing talent. His solo was well thought out. He rated very high in style, originality, and overall.
