American Band Idol Competition

Held at the American Band Instrument Service Education Center Tyler, Texas

The third annual AMERICAN BAND IDOL COMPETITION was held at the American Band Instrument Service Education Center in Tyler, Texas. The event is patterned after the "AMERICAN IDOL" television show only without the harsh words to contestants. Students are given the opportunity to perform before an audience and three college level judges. The judges grade the students' performance on a points system and give suggestions for improving their playing. Free T-shirts are given to all contestants. Cash prizes and trophies are given to the top three performers in both the middle school and the high school divisions.

Middle School Division

A total of seventeen middle school students from throughout the East Texas area signed up to perform for the judges. The competition this year was a lot tougher than in past years. However, the judges narrowed the field down to six finalists. The six students chosen were Ben Lee, Katie Kindig, Shay Butrum, Amber Smith, Tyler Corley, and Carrie Shick. All participants received an American Band Idol T-Shirt.

Judges in back row are Dr. Jeff Emge from the University of Texas at Tyler, Joe Teague from Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, and Dr. Ken Muckelroy retired music director from UT Tyler.


The first place winner was Katie Kindig from White Oak Middle School. An oboist, Katie received a $200.00 gift certificate and a trophy.

The second place winner was Shay Butrum also from White Oak Middle School. Shay received a $100.00 gift certificate, and a trophy for her fine trumpet playing.

Also a trumpet player, the third place winner was Ben Lee from Wills Point Middle School. Ben received a $50.00 gift certificate, and a trophy.


High School Division

A total of twenty high school students from throughout the East Texas area signed up to perform for the judges. As with the middle school students, the competition was tougher this year. The judges narrowed the field down to six finalists. The six students chosen as finalists were Sara Butler, Hanna Kawaguechi, Azusa Terao, Sara Curtis, Allan Ward, Correan Barker,and Sean Harvey.

The first place winner was Hanna Kawaguechi a flute player from Kaufman High School. Hanna received a $300.00 gift certificate, a trophy, and the American Band Idol Medal. All participants received an American Band Idol T-Shirt.

The second place winner was Azusa Terao, a fine alto sax player also from Kaufman High School. Azusa received a $150.00 gift certificate, and a trophy. All participants received an American Band Idol T-Shirt.

A clarinetist, the third place winner was Alan Ward from Athens High School. Alan received a $75.00 gift certificate, and a trophy. All participants received an American Band Idol T-Shirt.
