American Band Idol Competition

Held at the American Band Instrument Service Education Center Tyler, Texas

The second annual AMERICAN BAND IDOL COMPETITION was held at the American Band Instrument Service Education Center in Tyler, Texas. The event is patterned after the AMERICAN IDOL television show only without the harsh words to contestants. Students are given the opportunity to perform before an audience and three college level judges. The judges grade the student's performance on a points system and give suggestions for improving the performance. Free T-shirts are given to all performers. Cash prizes and trophies are given to the top three performers in both the middle school and the high school divisions.

Middle School Division

A total of fifteen middle school students from throughout the East Texas area signed up to perform for the judges. The competition was keen. However, the judges narrowed the field down to six finalists. The six students chosen were C. J. Huff, Chris Braswell, Anndrea Redding, De'Marcus Walker, Josh Clark, and Kelsi Wicks.

All participants received an American Band Idol T-Shirt.

Judges in back row are Mike McGowan from Panola College, Carthage, Dr. Jeff Emge from the University of Texas at Tyler, and Wayne Smith from Kilgore College.

The first place winner was Chris Braswell, marimba, from Hubbard MS in Tyler. Chris received a $150.00 gift certificate and a trophy.

The second place winner was Kelsi Wicks, bassoon, from Moore MS in Tyler. Kelsi received a $75.00 gift certificate, and a trophy.

The third place winner was De'Marcus Walker, tuba, from Stewart MS in Tyler. De'Marcus received a $25.00 gift certificate, and a trophy.


High School Division

A total of fifteen high school students from throughout the East Texas area signed up to perform for the judges. As with the middle school students, the competition was intense. The judges narrowed the field down to six finalists. The six students chosen as finalists were Justin Wade, Sarah Curtis, Rhett Pilcher, Zavion Rettig, Javier Prieto, Sesha Wallace.

Judges in back row are Mike McGowan from Panola College, Carthage, Dr. Jeff Emge from UT Tyler, and Wayne Smith from Kilgore College. Cheryl Hale stands at the far left in the back row.

The third place winner was Sarah Curtis, clarinet, from Carlisle HS. Sarah received a $50.00 gift certificate, and a trophy.

The second place winner was Rhett Pilcher, marimba, from White Oak HS. Rhett received a $100.00 gift certificate, and a trophy.

The first place winner was Sesha Wallace, alto sax, also from White Oak HS. Sesha received a $250.00 gift certificate, a trophy, and the American Band Idol Medal.

All participants received an American Band Idol T-Shirt.
