American Band Idol Competition
March 1, 2003
Held at the American Band Instrument Service Education Center Tyler, Texas

Middle School Division

A total of sixteen middle school students from throughout the East Texas area signed up to perform for the judges. The competition was keen. However, the judges narrowed the field down to six finalists. the six students chosen were Rhett Pitcher, Chris Braswell, Heidi Wise, Alex Flemming, Devin Murphy, and a percussion ensemble from Gladewater Middle School.

The third place winner was Alex Flemming, a trumpet player from Whitehouse Middle School. Alex received a $25.00 gift certificate, a trophy, and a large bag of goodies from the Leblanc Corporation.

The second place winner was Chris Braswell, a percussion player from Hubbard Middle School in Tyler. Chris received a $75.00 gift certificate, a trophy, and assorted items from Leblanc.

The first place winner was Rhett Pilcher, a marimba player from White Oak Middle School. Rhett received a $150.00 gift certificate, a trophy, and the Leblanc Corporation gift assortment.

All participants received an American Band Idol T-Shirt.


High School Division

Judges, (from left to right in the back row) were: Wayne Smith from Kilgore College, Dr. Jeff Emge from the University of Texas at Tyler, and Virgil Beene from Lon Morris College in Jacksonville. On the far right is Cheryl Hale, representing American Band.

High School Winners were,( left to right): Sandra Davis, Clarinet, John Tyler High School, Sean Dodd, Tuba, Overton High School, and Jessica Harris, Clarinet, Palestine High School,.

A total of twenty two high school students from throughout the East Texas area signed up to perform for the judges. As with the middle school students, the competition was intense. The judges narrowed the field down to six finalists. The six students chosen as finalists were Sandra Davis, Sean Dodd, Jessica Harris, Jonas Ruther, Cherelle Wilson, and Chase Warren.

The third place winner was Sandra Davis, a clarinet player from John Tyler High School in Tyler. Sandra received a $50.00 gift certificate, a trophy, and a large bag of goodies from the Leblanc Corporation.

The second place winner was Jessica Harris, a clarinet player from Palestine High School. Jessica received a $100.00 gift certificate, a trophy, and an assortment of items from Leblanc.

The first place winner was Sean Dodd, a tuba player from Overton High School. Sean received a $250.00 gift certificate, a trophy, a medal, and the items from the Leblanc Corporation.

All participants received an American Band Idol T-Shirt.
