The Canton High School Band was first formed in 1950. Since that time, it has been a constant source of pride for Canton Independent School District and the city of Canton. During the last decade, the Canton High School band program has excelled in many areas, including earning top ratings at University Interscholastic League and various invitational competitions. With approximately 330 students enrolled in the band program in 6-12, the Canton band program starts all students out in either brass, woodwind or percussion groups at Canton Junior High. When students reach seventh grade, students are placed in either Concert Band or Symphonic Band, both of which are made up of seventh and eighth graders. Students at the junior high level regularly participate in solo and ensemble, all-region programs, and UIL Concert & Sight-reading. Students at Canton Junior High also have the opportunity to participate in jazz band. At Canton High School, students begin the school year in August with band camp, where they begin practice for the Mighty Eagle Band’s annual UIL Marching Competition show. Canton High School regularly places 25-30 students in all-region bands, and usually places between 2-5 students in the ATSSB All-State Honor Bands. A result-oriented program, Canton High School alumni have been the recipients of upwards of a million dollars in scholarships to colleges and universities throughout the Southwest. In addition, the program boasts five alumni who graduated from CHS since 1991 who are active band directors, with five more currently pursuing music education degrees. |
